What he finally gave stupak wasn't anything more than a re-iteration of a 1976 bill still on the books that federal funds won't be used for abortion.

Do I think it should be treated like any other procedure? Hell yes, but at this point I heave a HUGE sigh of relief that they got it passed. It's not perfect by any means, I'd much prefer there be a flat out public option and making it a requirement may have appeased the health insurance industry somewhat, but it's going to shoot them in the foot with voters.

There will still be modifications, we'll see what finally comes out of the senate squeezings.

OK, so Stupak is an asshole. No argument there. But ... my read of the executive order is that it does nothing that isn't already law. Sure, it would've been awesome if Obama and the House could have clawed back some of that stupid Hyde Amendment ... but they didn't expand it, either. We're still where we were on Friday, with no Federal money being able to be spent on abortions. The only difference is now we have other health care reform, too. The Executive Order was a fig leaf to let Stupak dig himself out of his pit of stupidity.

The language actually expands the Hyde Amendment into the private insurance exchanges that the Health Care reform bill. It isn't just re-iterating the Hyde amendment.

Actually, it is reiterating what was already in the bill to begin with. It is literally an executive order that says 'the federal ban on funding for abortion elements that are already in the bill are in fact already in the bill'.

Because I'm tired of this "it's no big deal it's already the law" argument:

And yeah, it totally sucks. We should get rid of the Hyde Amendment. We should provide federal funding for abortion. But we'll have to get to Stupak and his types another day. And it's that much more likely now that we've signed into law the idea that all of us deserve health care.

I absolutely hate this complacent idea that we should support the lesser of two evils. It's rampant in the LBGT community as well-Dems are better to us than most Republicans, so as long as they aren't screaming we're going to burn in hell or saying we should stay in the kitchen it's okay if they treat us like expendable pieces of shit that they have no responsibility or obligation to uphold their promises to.

Unfortunately, taking the leser evil is a basic of politics. Government does not exit to acheive truth and justice, it exists to resolve conflicts between interest groups. If ANYONE is actually happy with a new law it's certain to be wrong headed and dangerous.

Women are not an "interest group." Women are over half the population, and it would be fucking nice if the government recognized that.
